How SDS Authoring Works

Step 1. Build your product record

Enter composition and select substances from the integrated databases.

Step 2. Classify with the right tools

Use toxicity-estimate and VOC calculators to support hazard determinations under WHMIS, HCS, and CLP.

Step 3. Generate SDS and labels

Produce SDS and corresponding labels for the required jurisdiction and language.

Step 4. Expert review

A senior chemist validates each SDS before publication.

Step 5. Publish and update

Export final SDS as PDF and retain editable versions for future revisions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Safety Data Sheet (SDS) Authoring Software

What is SDS authoring software?

SDS Authoring Software is a web-based system for drafting, editing, reviewing, and publishing Safety Data Sheets and hazard labels that align with GHS-based frameworks used under WHMIS, OSHA HCS, and CLP.

Can I access the software online without needing to install it?

Yes, our SDS software is a cloud-based software, also known as Software as a Service (SaaS). No installation is required; all you need is an internet connection. It is therefore accessible 24/7, wherever you are.

Do you review our SDSs before they are published?

Yes. SDSs produced through Kalium are validated by experienced chemists prior to publication.

Which languages are supported?

Canada outputs are available in English and French. United States outputs are available in English and Spanish. European outputs are available in six languages covering thirteen countries. Additional languages may be added on request.

Which file formats can we export?

Final SDSs are exported as PDF files ready for distribution. Editable working versions remain in the system for future updates.

Can we still edit sections after generation?

Yes. All fields remain editable so regulatory specialists can fine-tune wording and layout before and after review.

How does this relate to SDS Management or Chemical Storage?

Use SDS Authoring to create documents. Use SDS Management to store, search, and distribute SDSs and to print workplace labels with QR codes. Use Chemical Storage to plan safe storage and maintain inventories.

How often do SDSs need to be updated, and does the software assist with that?

SDSs must be updated:

  • When there is a change in formulation,
  • When new data or studies become available, or
  • When there is a regulatory update, such as the 2022 revision of WHMIS or the 2024 revision of HCS.

The first comprehensive database included in the Kalium software contains over 7,000 CAS numbers. These CAS numbers are regularly updated to stay abreast of new data and studies available, as required by hazardous materials regulations. Each CAS has been analyzed by Kalium's experienced chemists on multiple points, including:

  • Physical data (boiling point, flash point, melting point, etc.)
  • Combustion and decomposition products
  • VOC or low vapour pressure VOC status
  • Incompatible products
  • Strict classification, such as mutagenic, reproductive hazard or aspiration hazard, acute toxicity assessment, etc.
  • IDLH
  • Lethal doses by oral, dermal and inhalation routes
  • Symptoms as well as acute and chronic effects
  • Note to the physician
  • Aquatic and terrestrial ecotoxicity
  • Reactivity and stability
  • Risks of hazardous reactions
  • Conditions to avoid
  • Incompatible materials
  • Information on the transport of dangerous goods
  • Etc.

As a result, thanks to this included analysis, when classifying your product or mixture, each ingredient (CAS number) will appear, allowing you to make an informed choice. To help you with revisions, you can return to this section and the classification changes made by the new information will be highlighted.

Our second integrated database is that of raw materials.
This database contains more than 2,500 raw materials evaluated for you by our experts. Each commercial material sold on the market has been broken down by Kalium's chemists into 100% CAS numbers, allowing for optimal classification of mixtures.
